HarperCollins College Outline Introduction to Calculus (Harpercollins College Outline Series)
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-03-26 Summary: Concise coverage of calculus core with numerous worked problems, but lacking fully-worked solutions to end of chapter problems ... There is now a later, slightly updated, and renamed edition of this work, "Introduction to Calculus(Collins College Outlines)", with the author now identified as Joan Van Glabek (ISBN-10: 006088150X). There are a few changes and additions, but both editions are quite similar, so my reviews of both are closely matched. This is a relatively short, 250 page, book. Within that limited space, and in six chapters, it provides a review of basic pre-calculus topics followed by: Functions, Limits, and Continuity; Derivatives; ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 1999-09-16 Summary: Don't give up on Calculus before you try this book! ... I'm no dummy, but I had a lot of trouble understanding Calculus (had to withdraw 2 times). The teachers couldn't or wouldn't explain, the class text was obscure, but this book explained the basics in a straightforward style leaving you to have to guess very little. Of all the *many* Calc books I tried, this was *easily* the best. Thanks, Ms. Dykes and Harper Collins for making Calculus comprehensible. (PS. I got an "A.") ...more

Introduction to Tensor Calculus and Continuum Mechanics
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-12-07 Summary: Good Tensor Revision ... I still find some of the material in this book very hard to follow. However the majority of the material is really well presented and very helpful. ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2006-09-17 Summary: Understandable Tensor Book ... I basically have bought at least half of the tensor books out there; J.H.'s book set me on the right path. Most books open with mind boggling notation juggling acts without the purpose set forth. Its clear here that you are taking vector notation and converting it to indicial notation for calculus and vector stuff like div, grad and curl and various combos of vector formulas. The examples are great! I am Mathcad user and am used to just plugging in numerical data using plain old vector notation, so learning indicial ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2005-06-23 Summary: Truly wonderful book. ... I don't have much to add to the previous reviewer, but given the astonishing lack of reviews of the book, let me give a second datapoint for those who are considering buying this book. This book is the most gentle introduction to tensor analysis I've ever seen. It was obviously written by someone who puts a lot of thought into teaching. The book is certainly within reach to advanced undergraduates, and would also be appropriate to beginning graduate students. Aside from a stellar presentation of the subject, the exercises ...more
Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | Introduction to Tensor Calculus and Continuum Mechanics is an advanced College level mathematics text. The first part of the text introduces basic concepts, notations and operations associated with the subject area of tensor calculus. The material presented is developed at a slow pace with a detailed explanation of the many tensor operations. The first half of the text concludes with an introduction to the application of tensor concepts to differential geometry and relativity. The second...more

He was a Fellow for four years at Pembroke College, Cambridge, has held a one-year visiting position at the University of British Columbia, and has been an invited speaker to both academic and financial audiences in Europe and North America. Andrew Rennie Studied mathematics at Cambridge. He is presently Head of Financial Engineering at Rabo Bank in London, a position he reached via philosophy, chemistry and graphic design." [2] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-11-07 Summary: Excellent introduction ... I think this is one of the best introductions to mathematical finance around. Unfortunately, the book was out of print when I taught the subject, so I never got to test it as a textbook. In particular I really like chapter 2, where the authors introduce the key concepts in discrete time binomial processes. This allow them to introduce deep concepts like information and filtration in an understandable manner, while few students really understand measurability. (If you think that is a trivial idea from stochastic analysis, ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-10-08 Summary: Second edition please !!! ... This is a great book, no doubt about it... The basic ideas and tools of mathematical finance (Arbitrage Pricing Theory, Stochastic Calculus, Martingale Measure) are presented in a VERY conceptual way, allowing one to gain solid intuition in a field often obscured by abstraction and formalism. The description of the impact of change of measure on Brownian Motion, among others, is a little gem! Although the level of mathematics is not overly complex, some sections still require a fair amount of "fiddling" with pen and ...more
Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | Here is the first rigorous and accessible account of the mathematics behind the pricing, construction, and hedging of derivative securities. With mathematical precision and in a style tailored for market practioners, the authors describe key concepts such as martingales, change of measure, and the Heath-Jarrow-Morton model. Starting from discrete-time hedging on binary trees, the authors develop continuous-time stock models (including the Black-Scholes method). They stress practicalities...more
