Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-05-02 Summary: Great book so far but could use an errata. ... I am really happy with this book. The review section is great and the layout is very clean. However, I have already found a few mistakes which makes me wonder which mistakes I am missing. Could really use an errata. ...more

Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | Now students have nothing to fear … Math textbooks can be as baffling as the subject they’re teaching. Not anymore. The best-selling author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Calculus has taken what appears to be a typical calculus workbook, chock full of solved calculus problems, and made legible notes in the margins, adding missing steps and simplifying solutions. Finally, everything is made perfectly clear. Students will be prepared to solve those obscure problems that were never...more

Calculus (Stewart's Calculus Series)
Feature: ... MAT 201 ...more
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-07-25 Summary: A calculus student's opinion ... Admittedly, I've never used another calculus textbook, but I generally found this one to be good enough that I could learn from it. I have read the chapters before and after class and generally found the book to helpful in my understanding of the subject material. Having said that, I like math and have a very strong base in algebra, so the examples never really left me wondering (as so many people have complained about). It's not magic he's using to solve problems, it's algebra. Stewart skips steps in his example problems ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-05-22 Summary: The best for beginner ... I went over Larson twice and Stewart once as a part of my Calculus I II III study. So here is how I feel the difference between Larson 8th edition and Stewart 6th edition. Stewart text is better than Larson, especially in multivariable calculus section. I would say it is 50% better. Because the graphics are much better and clear. The multivariable figures in Larson rumble together and take quite awhile to decode. Moreover, Stewart also explain the concepts behind the multivariable better. Although it is not very rigorous, ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-05-11 Summary: Good Purchase ... Very useful book, it doesn't have the same order of topics as the USA version but you can live with this fact. ...more

The Umbral Calculus (Dover Books on Mathematics)
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-09-30 Summary: Surprising similarities ... Have you come across the umbral calculus? The umbra (Latin: "shadow") is the darkest part of a shadow. But in mathematics? Perhaps a generating function is the shadow of its distribution? Or the term umbral calculus refers to surprising similarities between otherwise unrelated polynomial equations, and certain shadowy techniques used to prove them. It is used in the study of orthogonal polynomials, in differential equations, in computations generally, and in the study of probability distributions. In fact it is an ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2004-06-07 Summary: Another viewpoint ... Another viewpoint on this subject than the one in the paper of Rota, Kahaner, and Odlyzko is in a paper titled _The_Umbral_Calculus_, by Steven Roman and Gian-Carlo Rota, published in Advances in Mathematics, volume 31, pages 95-188, in 1978. That paper makes the connection between the theory of Sheffer sequences and the "symbolic method" of Blissard much clearer than does the one by R., K., & O., and can also serve as motivation if you need that before tackling this book. I'm writing this second review in order to ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2003-05-16 Summary: Indispensible, but read Rota's paper first ... I'd give this about four-and-a-half stars, but the software allows only integers. In the preface, the author, Steven Roman, correctly identifies this book's deficiency quite explicitly: It presents the theory before explaining the motivation. Later, when he gets into application to concrete examples, Roman also seems to view such application as the only source of motivation. The book is primarily about Sheffer sequences. A Sheffer sequence is a certain kind of polynomial sequence. A polynomial sequence is understood ...more
Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | Geared toward upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, this elementary introduction to classical umbral calculus explores Sheffer sequences and operators and their adjoints, with numerous examples of associated and other sequences. Also discusses the connection constants problem and duplication formulas, the Lagrange inversion formula, operational formulas, inverse relations, and binomial convolution. 1984 edition. ...more
