Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-07 Summary: A must have ... I would recommend anyone taking Calculus and needing the work book to also buy this book. It has helped me figure out the harder even numbered problems by giving me an solutions for similar problems. I don't know what I would without it. ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-11-21 Summary: Review ... It is very helpful indeed. The only downfall is that this book does not cover chapters beyond Ch. 11, therefore if you are taking Calculus BC, you are out of luck. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-11-04 Summary: Salvation! ... This is an excelent book! I bought it right before my final exam (let me point out that I wasn't in the best conditions for that exam)and I passed, eventhough I thought it was impossible that I did. Appart from saving me, this is a great book to use along with the textbook since it gives you detailed answers for each odd numbered excercise, with process and everything. I was extremely pleased with these book ...more

Stochastic Calculus for Finance II: Continuous-Time Models (Springer Finance) (v. 2)
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-02-22 Summary: Finally, a book that explains.. ... As one of my Math professors put it, "a mathematician will never ever dream of coming up with Black-Scholes formula". The key here is to understand why Fischer Black and Myron Scholes were forced to make the kind of assumptions they have made to price an option contract. The adapted processes, the sigma algebras and several such seemingly abstract concepts are hard to understand or even teach in one or two semesters. It seems the accepted pedagogical approach in teaching this subject has been to skim the surface and ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-05-03 Summary: Good and rigourous intro to financial maths ... This is definitely one of the best introductory books on financial mathematics. The book starts to make sense after a summer course in discrete-time martingale course (using william's blue book). Shreve's book gives a general introduction to Brownian motion and Ito stochastic calculus. At the same time, he shows how to apply these theoreis into financial maths, equity or interest rate etc. If you want to learn financial mathematics at a relatively more rigourous level (yet still not too difficult), this is the book ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-03-24 Summary: excellent book on quantitative finance ... Nicely written. Shreve is the one of the best authors in mathematical writings(another one I like is milnor). Worth buying one. ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-01-13 Summary: The definitive word ... This is the most fundamental word in mathematical finance. Those with a background in math will benefit most: ordinary differential equations, probability theory, statistics and multivariable calculus prerequisites. This is a very mathematical approach. Don't look to it for computational implementations of the financial models it covers. But for the mathematical foundations of the models, this is THE book. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Stochastic Calculus for Finance evolved from the first ten years of the Carnegie Mellon Professional Master's program in Computational Finance. The content of this book has been used successfully with students whose mathematics background consists of calculus and calculus-based probability. The text gives both precise statements of results, plausibility arguments, and even some proofs, but more importantly intuitive explanations developed and refine through classroom experience with this...more
Calculus Made Easy
Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-14 Summary: good book ... Just a quick review. This book can really explain things easier than what my text book does. Though some pages of the book are cut off a bit but not really a big problem. ...more
[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-11-01 Summary: Clear and succinct, but not easy ... I like math and am a B or B-plus in aptitude; I think I am this book's audience. For me, it has been excellent, but for someone who struggles with math, it might not be as good. The book keeps the new ideas of calculus short and simple (in particular by leaving out the idea of a limit). But it does expect you to be clever with the algebra you already know. The problems ask you to extend what was discussed, not merely to repeat it. As Gardner says, traditional calculus textbooks must include every possible topic, so ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-10-30 Summary: Highly recommend 'Calculus Made Easy' for learning on your own ... Hello! Silvanus Thompson wrote an excellent book. I can see why this is a classic. He does a really good job of explaining calculus in a language that is both simple and understandable. However, I do have an issue with this edition. It is in deplorable shape concerning the format of the text -- pages are out of order, words are missing, and sometimes the text encroaches on the inner margin so far that it is hard to read (you have to open the book really wide). Overall, I give Silvanus Thompson an 'A+' for making a ...more
[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-10-11 Summary: How does this follow? ... I love this book, at least up to the bottom of page 23 (I just purchased the second edition from Amazon). There are two equations at the bottom of the page. Let's call them equation 1 and equation 2. Equation 2, the one at the bottom of the page, is supposed to be a restatement of equation 1. I cannot figure out how the author gets from 1 to 2. It seems to me that equation 2 should read [(x)e-2][(1+2dx/x)e-1].Can anyone help me with this? Thanks, Phil M. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
