Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-11-27 Summary: get this book! ... I was lost in calculus here at Babson College and sinking fast. Nothing the teacher said made any sense. So I took a chance with Calculus for Dummies and it paid off! it's absolutely amazing. Concepts I couldn't even begin to understand in class and from the assigned book were explained so clearly and made it overall seem easy. He also makes calculus seem easy through sarcasm which takes away some of the fears associated with calculus and I think that works wonders by appealing to your subconscious. I highly recommend ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-10-09 Summary: Calculus for Dummies ... Great review and explaination of math. The book does not have many examples to check your understanding. Therefore, I would recommend purchasing the matching workbook if you are using the book for self-study. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-09-13 Summary: Fantastic overview before taking my College Calculus class!! ... Dear Mr. Ryan, I picked up "Calculus for Dummies" this morning in preparation for an upcoming college calculus class and I'm THOROUGHLY enjoying it! I am literally laughing out loud - thank you for making math fun. I really enjoy how you connect with your reader. Signed, Laughing in Farmington, MN p.s. My favorite quote so far... "Subtracting fractions works like adding fractions except that instead of adding, you subtract. Insights like this are the reason they pay me the big bucks." ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-07-31 Summary: Drop every other calculus book and get this one. ... The Author, Mark Ryan, bush wacks all the clutter away. This is by far the best Calculus book I've owned and I own a few. He gets right into the concepts in a easy to understand way and breaks all the ideas down into ways you can relate to (no calculus pun intended). There are no long draw out cryptic proofs filled with a gazillion veriables and symbols and hard to understand einsteinian math-lingo. There is just an easy to understand method of learning calculus. If you are learning limits, differentiation, integrals, ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | The mere thought of having to take a required calculus course is enough to make legions of students break out in a cold sweat. Others who have no intention of ever studying the subject have this notion that calculus is impossibly difficult unless you happen to be a direct descendant of Einstein. Well, the good news is that you can master calculus. It's not nearly as tough as its mystique would lead you to think. Much of calculus is really just very advanced algebra, geometry, and trig....more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-26 Summary: excellent book ... Having read Strogatz's "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos" Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos: With Applications To Physics, Biology, Chemistry, And Engineering (Studies in nonlinearity) I can only say that this book shines in the same spirit of a man who is able to bring conceptual understanding of math to a level that the read is able to glimpse and understand the workings of the minds who derived and invented the theorems to begin with. Many reviewers here have already mentioned the heartfelt rendition of the author's friendship ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-05 Summary: Goind home ... Full disclosure: Don Joffray, about whom this book was written, was a great friend of my parents so I knew him as much more than a teacher. The great thing about this book is that the author, Steve Strogatz, paints an accurate, empathetic picture of Joff the man & Joff the teacher, and also weaves a compelling story about the enduring friendship between two math geeks (I say this with admiration). I am not a math major so some of the calculations went beyond my meager understanding, but that didn't matter. Even the ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-11-11 Summary: A very interesting book ... This is a very interesting book about the relationship between a high school student and teacher that extends long after the student has graduated. Because both student and teacher are math teachers, the correspondence between them frequently revolves aroung math problems that interest them, but it includes much more than that. Not being mathematically inclined whatsoever, I skipped over all the math, and found it a touching story. For those interested in the math too, it will be a double treat. ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-11-11 Summary: Calculus in Life ... Written by a Math Prof @ Cornell University, it is on Calculus, not in the dry formal math textbook way, but via a life story and many correspondences with his retired high-school math teacher, who helped the author overcome his fear of "epsilon-delta" in Calculus lesson at high-school. Also in this book the author gave the working example of Feynman's "Differentiate under Integral" trick, not shown in the original book "Are you Joking, Mr. Feynman" where Feynman mentioned he self-paced the "secret weapon" from the ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | The Calculus of Friendship is the story of an extraordinary connection between a teacher and a student, as chronicled through more than thirty years of letters between them. What makes their relationship unique is that it is based almost entirely on a shared love of calculus. For them, calculus is more than a branch of mathematics; it is a game they love playing together, a constant when all else is in flux. The teacher goes from the prime of his career to retirement, competes in whitewater...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-09-28 Summary: it helps ... The book is full of smart ass comments and jokes, this to me can get kind of annoying. However I think he did this on purpose to make calculus less drab. as far as the subject matter goes, he chops things up and feeds it to you in little pieces as though you were a baby. Often has too many examples which can make it hard to pay attention at times but I suppose is better than too few. I treat this book as supplementary instruction to my calculus class. I appreciate the pre-calculus review for all the pre calc I forgot ...more

I have found this to be a good reference tool to ease back in to university classes that require calculus without having to spend money and time to sit through the classes again. This would also be helpful if you are having trouble understanding your current calc class. I liked the workbook. The step by step "work" helps. ...more
