Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-26 Summary: excellent book ... Having read Strogatz's "Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos" Nonlinear Dynamics And Chaos: With Applications To Physics, Biology, Chemistry, And Engineering (Studies in nonlinearity) I can only say that this book shines in the same spirit of a man who is able to bring conceptual understanding of math to a level that the read is able to glimpse and understand the workings of the minds who derived and invented the theorems to begin with. Many reviewers here have already mentioned the heartfelt rendition of the author's friendship ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2010-02-05 Summary: Goind home ... Full disclosure: Don Joffray, about whom this book was written, was a great friend of my parents so I knew him as much more than a teacher. The great thing about this book is that the author, Steve Strogatz, paints an accurate, empathetic picture of Joff the man & Joff the teacher, and also weaves a compelling story about the enduring friendship between two math geeks (I say this with admiration). I am not a math major so some of the calculations went beyond my meager understanding, but that didn't matter. Even the ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-11-11 Summary: Calculus in Life ... Written by a Math Prof @ Cornell University, it is on Calculus, not in the dry formal math textbook way, but via a life story and many correspondences with his retired high-school math teacher, who helped the author overcome his fear of "epsilon-delta" in Calculus lesson at high-school. Also in this book the author gave the working example of Feynman's "Differentiate under Integral" trick, not shown in the original book "Are you Joking, Mr. Feynman" where Feynman mentioned he self-paced the "secret weapon" from the ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-10-02 Summary: I really enjoyed it ... Very touching book. I admit I did not understand all the math ... I enjoyed seeing it, though.:) Bittersweet in a "benjamin button" sort of way. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | The Calculus of Friendship is the story of an extraordinary connection between a teacher and a student, as chronicled through more than thirty years of letters between them. What makes their relationship unique is that it is based almost entirely on a shared love of calculus. For them, calculus is more than a branch of mathematics; it is a game they love playing together, a constant when all else is in flux. The teacher goes from the prime of his career to retirement, competes in whitewater...more

[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2009-11-15 Summary: Better than expected ... If your teacher doesn't make the ride easy for you, then you can count on this book. It's organized so that you really feel as though you are learning Calculus from start to finish. I've looked at other books that seem to jump around from concept to concept, but the approach here is well thought out and the explanations adequate. Formatting (color of text, organization of topics, etc.) makes it easy to find what you're looking for if a section refers you back to a previously studied concept (or forward in some cases) ...more

Customer Reviews [1] Rating: 4 Date: 2010-02-13 Summary: Good Price ... Enjoyed finding the book I needed at a much cheaper price than the school bookstore! ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-05-03 Summary: Good and rigourous intro to financial maths ... This is definitely one of the best introductory books on financial mathematics. The book starts to make sense after a summer course in discrete-time martingale course (using william's blue book). Shreve's book gives a general introduction to Brownian motion and Ito stochastic calculus. At the same time, he shows how to apply these theoreis into financial maths, equity or interest rate etc. If you want to learn financial mathematics at a relatively more rigourous level (yet still not too difficult), this is the book ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-03-24 Summary: excellent book on quantitative finance ... Nicely written. Shreve is the one of the best authors in mathematical writings(another one I like is milnor). Worth buying one. ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-01-13 Summary: The definitive word ... This is the most fundamental word in mathematical finance. Those with a background in math will benefit most: ordinary differential equations, probability theory, statistics and multivariable calculus prerequisites. This is a very mathematical approach. Don't look to it for computational implementations of the financial models it covers. But for the mathematical foundations of the models, this is THE book. ...more
Editorial Reviews ... Product Description | Stochastic Calculus for Finance evolved from the first ten years of the Carnegie Mellon Professional Master's program in Computational Finance. The content of this book has been used successfully with students whose mathematics background consists of calculus and calculus-based probability. The text gives both precise statements of results, plausibility arguments, and even some proofs, but more importantly intuitive explanations developed and refine through classroom experience with this...more

[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2009-08-19 Summary: You need this book! ... If, and only if, you are capable of explaining technical things in non-technical terms, can it be said you truly understand them. Mark Zegarelli truly understands Calculus, and because he does, so will you upon working through his book. Too often, writers of mathematics books seem more interested in impressing their readers than teaching them. Many times, I have come away from such a book declaring, "The writer sure seems to know what he's talking about. I only wish I did." This cannot be said of Calculus II. Mark ...more
