I was looking for a good refresher on Calculus and among my collection of books, I had another Larson Title on pre-calculus which was found to be a very good read. My older Calculus book by Schenk is less fluid and to my delight, this book, "Calculus" by Larson and Edwards, like the "PreCalculus with Limits" by Larson and Hostetler, is easily assimilated. The book is well sectioned and the explanatory text is clear, building naturally upon previous material and backed by a good cadre of examples. This book works with ...more

Quick Summary: Pros: Good number of exercises, *some* good examples, lots of illustrations, lots of good guidelines and formula sheets. Cons: Some not-so-great examples, some examples *should* add more algebra steps, 3 editions in 7 years necessary, cost of book-per-class versus 3-set volume is absurd. This book was required for my Calculus II course, and would also be used for Calc I (if I had taken it), as well as Calc III. So far, around 1/3 of the way through the semester, I have found the book to be very helpful. Whenever I had questions about some of the material, I found it was more useful to refer to the book, than my notes. When I practiced on the exams in this book, they were more challenging (granted, I'm still in 8th grade, I don't know a lot about prep books)than many others. In fact, I used to get 5's on the princeton, but now I can barely get a 4 on this Barron's. I used this book for the multiple-choice section and CollegeBoard's own materials for the free-response section. Most of my students scored 5. I used this book solely for the multiple-choice practice problems, not the review or tests, so I can only vouch for the MC problems. The coverage of topics is both broad and deep, with well over 500 problems of varying difficulty. Taking the AP Exam, I felt confident, prepared, and familiar with every problem type.
